Pre-AP Classes

Leeds Middle School works with A+ College Ready  to dramatically increase the number of students taking math, science, English, and social studies Advanced Placement courses. This challenging curriculum prepares students to earn qualifying scores on AP Exams that can potentially count for college credit.  In 2016 alone, over 20,000 Alabama students earned a qualifying score of 3, 4, or 5.  It is our goal at the middle school to offer rigorous curriculum that will help students prepare to succeed not only in high school, but also at the college level.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pre-AP?
Pre-AP classes are grade level academically advanced courses that are meant to challenge motivated students to further their understanding of in-depth content.

What is the difference between a Pre-AP class and a general education class?
Both classes are built on the core academic curriculum provided in the Alabama Course of Study for each course. Students in Pre-AP, however, experience class at a faster pace with more in-depth classroom discussion. They also accept an increased amount of independent work and reading and understand that they are held to greater academic expectations on assignments, organization, and time management.

Why should my child apply for Pre-AP classes?
Pre-AP courses are designed to prepare students to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school. AP courses are college-level courses taught in a high school setting, generally during 11th and 12th grade. Students who take these classes have the opportunity to take the AP exam for any course they have completed. Qualifying scores on the AP exam have the potential to earn students college credit or advanced standings at certain schools.

Can any child take a Pre-AP class?
Any student of Leeds Middle School can apply to become part of the Pre-AP classes at their grade level. Placements are determined based on ACT Aspire scores, grades, and teacher recommendation.  Students who are selected to participate should demonstrate the following characteristics:
  • Strong study skills and self-motivation
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication
  • Self-discipline in organization, planning, and completion of all work
